Project Objective The main objective of the project is significant use of Renewal Natural Resources System Strategy (RNRSS) and other natural resources research outputs for the benefit (direct/ in-direct) of poor men and women in diverse contexts.
Expected Outputs
  1. Increased capacity of community based seed production (CBSP) groups to scale out improved rice and legume varieties.
  2. Rice-based technology options out scaled in low altitude regions (terai & low hills).
  3. Lessons from market and value chain analysis for rice out scaled.
  4. Farmer-to-farmer rice seed spread between geographically marginalized farmers in high hills enhanced.
  5. Policy issues analyzed and lessons advocated.
Major Activities
  1. Training to CBSP groups on marketing and business development in seed sub sector.
  2. Informal Research and Development (IRD) in rice and legumes covering 2000 HHs per year.
  3. Participatory market chain analysis (PMCA) in seed sub sector.
  4. Provide evidence base for changes in government subsidy policy and support for favorable changes.
Major Achievements
  1. Increased capacity of 8 CBSP groups (180 members) to scale out new rice and legume varieties.
  2. About 300 members received technical and marketing training on seed sub sector, and over 200 acquired new knowledge on seed marketing from exposure visits.
  3. Groups planted 165 kg mungbean for seed production in 5.5 ha land.
  4. About 12,500 farmers received IRD sets of new rice and legume varieties.
  5. All the CBSP groups have started preparing business plan for the production and marketing of rice and legumes seed.
Lessons Learnt
  1. FM radio could play a vital role in the marketing of rice and legume varieties.
  2. Mobilizing local resource person (experienced person of CBSP group members) in training to new CBSP group members is quite effective.
