Total Budget (NRs) 2,994,538.00
Project Objective Increase farmers' access to suitable management practices against fruit borer and viral disease thereby increasing the production and productivity of tomato and income of farmers.
Expected Outputs

  2. Uptake pathways for rapid dissemination of IPM approaches developed
Major Activities
  1. Community sensitization, group formation and mobilization
  2. Participatory evaluation of Insect-pest and disease tolerant lines
  3. Integrated fruit borer and white fly management trial
  4. Study on the efficacy of different trap crops in pest monitoring

  9. Publicity of research findings and success stories in local and national news media: booklets, technical reports, etc
Major Achievements
  1. Over 600 farmers were sensitized and went through the participatory research and demonstration activities in the field.
  2. Two Helicoverpa Nuclear Polyhydrosis Virus (HNPV) recycling units, on each in Latikoli, Surkhet and another in Sitapur, Banke, have been established.
  3. Appropriate technologies for the management of fruit borer and virus management in tomato validated and appropriate solutions recommended accordingly.
  4. Tomato production area of the recommended varieties in the project clusters increased substantially.
  5. Government organizations and other private service providers were made aware about the outcomes of the projects and recommended technological options.

Recommendations
  1. Sowing of sunflower seed @10-15 plants/kattha about one week prior to tomato transplanting protects the crops from pod borer.
  2. Planting tomato in post rainy seems (October) more remunerative than in normal season as it fetches higher price in the market.
  3. HNPV is effective for the management of Helicoverpa and can be recycled in local level.
  4. Milk spray @10-15 ml/litre three times at 10 days interval after the initiation of disease is effective.
  5. Virus recycling established in the farm communities should be mobilized to scale out lessons learnt in wider areas.
