Diversity of nettle species in the hills of Nepal

N. N. Khanal, T. B. Sapkota

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the indigenous plant species of Nepal. Wide ranges of morphtypes and close relatives of this herb are found all over the hill region of the country. In order to study the taxonomic richness of the nettle, plant samples were collected from various districts and taken to the National Herbarium and Plant Research Laboratory at Godawari for the determination of their identity. It appeared that taxonomic identity of Nepalese nettles is still under mystery. Many samples morphologically conformed to Urtica dioica. Some species locally known as allo, bhangre, chalne sisnu were suspected to be Girardinia diversifolia which, especially were found from mid-hills to high hills of Nepal. Three samples, all from swampy jungle with shady habitat were not matched with the available specimen and thus were remained unidentified.
