Potentiality
of Nettle (Urtica dioica L.) Extracts
in Controlling Aphids

Series
of laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted at Institute of
Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) to assess the effectiveness of nettle
extract for the management to aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae L.) on broad
leaf mustard in 2002. In laboratory, broad leaf mustard leaves in moist
chamber (petri plate containing moist filter paper) were treated with
different treatments followed by releasing 20 aphids per plate to test
repellent and pesticidal effect of nettle extract. In greenhouse, broadleaf
mustard plants at three-leaf stage were inoculated with 40 aphids followed
by spraying different nettle treatments. Although the nettle extract at
20% concentration promised to be effective against aphids in the laboratory
bioassay, the result of greenhouse experiment did not corroborate the
laboratory results. However, the study did give an indication that nettle
contains some active substances that can kill or devitalize the aphids.
It is a matter of further research as to whether chemical separation of
these substances for pest management purpose is economically viable and
technically feasible in our context.
