Regional Conference on 'Promoting Nutrition sensitive Agriculture for improving Nutrition Security and Health of Smallholders in South Asia' in Kathmandu

 

The regional consultation meeting on "Promoting Nutrition sensitive Agriculture for improving Nutrition Security and Health of Smallholders in South Asia" was held on 11-12 July 2023 in Kathmandu, to address malnutrition and food security as well as identify major Nutritional Sensitive Approaches (NSA) in South Asia. The event was organized by the SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC) and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and brought together stakeholders from the food and agriculture industries, government representatives, and experts in the field to discuss nutrition-sensitive approaches in South Asia. The two-day event had the graceful presence of honorary minister Mr. Bedu Ram Bhusal from the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock Development, Dr. Stephan Russel, head of Department Corporation and Economics, German Embassy, Dr. Hari Bahadur KC, DG, Department of Agriculture,  Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmad, SAARC Secretariat, Dr. Nasreen Sultana, Senior Program Specialist, SAC, Dr. Dipika Agrahar, Principal Scientist, ICAR, Dr. Shabnum Siwakoti, Joint-secretary, Department of Agriculture, MoALD, Dr. Tamanna Ferdous, the Regional Nutritional Advisor, and other experts related to nutrition and health. The conference celebrated the collaborative multi-sectoral strategy called 'Nutrition Smart Community.' and resulted in new policy recommendations to promote nutrition security in South Asian countries, taking into account the contextualized nutritional status of each country and the challenges discussed during the event. Participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Nepal marked their presence in the event; from Nepal, representatives from FAO, LIBIRD, CEPRED, GIZ, and FORWARD Nepal and many more participated.
